Aircraft trails, observation gaps, and impossible jumps

Why a line on an aircraft map is a sequence of received reports rather than a perfect record of the path flown.

A trail is sampled, not continuous

Aircraft tracking feeds contain position reports collected at intervals. SkyWatch joins accepted points to make the sequence readable. The line between two points is therefore an interpolation: it does not prove that the aircraft followed every metre of the drawn segment.

When reception is dense, a trail can resemble the actual route closely. When reports are minutes apart, the same line becomes a broad approximation. Terrain, antenna placement, transponder mode, provider filtering, rate limits, and temporary outages can all change the sampling interval.

Altitude color describes the point history

SkyWatch colors trail segments by altitude band so climbs, cruise levels, and descents can be scanned without opening every aircraft card. The color belongs to the accepted observations around that segment; it is not a terrain-clearance assessment or a guarantee of barometric accuracy.

Unknown altitude receives its own neutral treatment. Mixing an unknown value into the nearest known band would create a smooth-looking story unsupported by the feed. Ground values also require caution because some receivers report a text state while others provide a numeric altitude close to zero.

Identity changes can split or corrupt a route

A stable ICAO address is usually the strongest public identity, but records can also arrive with provider IDs, registrations, callsigns, or no callsign at all. Callsigns can change between flights and should not be the sole basis for joining long histories.

SkyWatch links aliases conservatively and prefers a short incomplete trail over attaching one aircraft's points to another. Enhanced regional feeds may change which identifier is populated between samples, so continuity logic considers several stable fields while rejecting generic labels.

Impossible jumps and the date line

A position that implies physically impossible speed is usually a bad sample, identity collision, provider reset, or delayed point. SkyWatch rejects or breaks those segments rather than drawing a dramatic line across a continent. The threshold must still allow fast military aircraft and sparse long-range sampling.

Longitude also wraps at 180 degrees. A flight crossing the Pacific may move a short distance from positive to negative longitude, while a naive drawing routine sends the line around the rest of the globe. Date-line-aware geometry chooses the short wrapped segment and keeps separate world copies from being connected.

How to investigate a surprising trail

Open the aircraft card and compare the identity fields, source, timestamps, speed, altitude, and heading before interpreting the shape. A sharp turn supported by several close reports is stronger than a single long segment between distant observations.

Treat source disagreement as a reason to inspect, not as proof that one feed is deceptive. Public cooperative tracking is powerful precisely because it can be compared, but every receiver network and commercial aggregation layer has blind spots.
