What an empty live map does and does not mean
A troubleshooting and interpretation guide for zero results, upstream outages, filters, stale caches, and genuine quiet periods.
Open the live mapCheck filters before interpreting absence
A source filter, military-only mode, force selection, paid-layer gate, geographic viewport, or expired preview can reduce the visible set to zero while the underlying feed remains healthy. Resetting the map provides a known baseline without changing account rights.
Layer controls should preserve their state during zoom and pan, but a shared link can intentionally open with a narrow filter set. Read the visible filter labels and URL state before treating a blank region as an observation about activity.
Separate provider health from result count
A healthy request can validly return no matching records. A failed request can also leave the previous set on screen, return an unavailable state, or fall back to cache. SkyWatch health indicators describe which of those paths occurred.
For enhanced regional aircraft coverage, a warming cache is different from a provider rejection or exhausted quota. The interface should not display a confident zero while the server is still waiting for the first successful response.
Public receiver networks have geography
Aircraft and vessel density often follows receiver locations, altitude, terrain, coastline, and data-sharing coverage. Sparse points in one country can reflect the network rather than fewer real vehicles. Satellite reception can fill some gaps but introduces its own delay and licensing limits.
Comparisons across regions should use comparable sources and time windows. A dense United States view and a sparse remote-theatre view are not automatically evidence of different operational tempo.
A source can be intermittently healthy
Rate limits, maintenance, anti-bot changes, schema changes, and network faults can make a feed alternate between useful and empty. SkyWatch records source health and retains bounded cache history so the application can explain instability instead of silently replacing it with zero.
Repeated failures require diagnosis at the server and provider boundary. Browser refreshes cannot repair a rejected credential, changed response shape, full storage volume, or a background poller that stopped running.
The responsible conclusion
If source health is green, filters are broad, freshness is current, and several independent feeds are empty, it is reasonable to report that no matching public observations were found during the stated window. That wording remains narrower than saying that no activity exists.
If any of those conditions fail, report the coverage problem first. Honest uncertainty is more useful than a clean-looking map that hides why its data disappeared.
